Car Tour Start from Menai Bridge. Leave by the Beaumaris Road, A545 and follow the Menai Strait to Beaumaris - famous for its 13th century moated castle. Nearby are Beaumaris Gaol (1829) and the Victorian Museum of Childhood. Take the Pentraeth road, B5109, crossing rolling countryside to Pentraeth. Here turn right onto A5025. There are fine views across Red Wharf Bay on the approach to the resort of Benllech. Continue with the Amlwch road and in 2 miles at a roundabout turn left. The main drive continues to the small resort of Amlwch, once an important copper ore port. Follow the Cemaes road and pass Bull Bay. Later skirt the village of Cemaes Bay and continue with signs for Valley. To the right is the Wylfa Nuclear Electric Power Station. Proceed through the pleasant countryside to Valley, where at the traffic signals the drive turns right onto the A5. Continue onto Holy Island and Holyhead. Ferry services leave Holyhead for sailings to Dublin and Dun Laoghaire, Ireland www.stenaline.com. Leave by the Treaddur Bay road, B4545. Pass through the small resort of Trearddur Bay and later cross Four Mile Bridge onto Anglesey proper for Valley. At the traffic lights, turn right onto the A5. Continue to Bryngwran then in 1 mile turn right onto the A4080, signed Rhosneigr. At the clock tower turn left, and in 1¼ miles turn right, signed Aberffraw. At the edge of Aberffraw keep left then in almost 3 miles turn right to Malltraeth. Skirt the Malltraeth Sands and pass the edge of Newborough Forest to reach Newborough. Half a mile farther, at the roundabout, turn left. Continue to Brynsiencyn and at the end of the village turn left. After 2 miles the drive passes, on the left, the road leading to Bryn-cellidu, site of one of the best examples of a Bronze Age burial chamber in Britain. Soon to the right is the 18th century Plas Newydd (National Trust). Optional visit to this elegant house with a fine art collection. On reaching the junction with the A5 turn right, signed Bangor. Alternatively turn left for a visit to Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch for an optional visit to the James Pringle Weavers Retail Outlet. Continue on the A5 and pass the 90ft high Anglesey Column, a memorial to the first Marquess of Anglesey who lost a limb fighting alongside the Duke of Wellington at the Battle of Waterloo. N.B. In 2001, the new A55 Expressway will open across the Isle of Anglesey, linking the mainland with the town and port of Holyhead. As a result, the section of dual carriageway between Llandegai and Llanfairpwll will be renumbered from A5 to A55. |
