Chirk Castle |
The pretty village of Chirk stands right on the border between England and Wales. Now bypassed by the new A5 road, it enjoys a peaceful way of life, although the sign saying “Welcome to Wales/Croeso i Gymru” is still there at the entrance to the village!
Chirk Castle, now run by the National Trust, was built by Edward I during his conquest of Wales. Many of the country’s castle are little more than ruins, but Chirk has the distinction of being the only 13th century castle in Wales which has been occupied continuously since it was built, and it has evolved into a stately home of distinction. It features a dungeon, elegant state rooms with beautiful furniture and paintings, lovely gardens, plus a National Trust shop and tea room.
Turning onto the B4500 from Chirk will enable you to explore the Ceiriog Valley, a delightful 18 mile stretch of countryside praised by Welsh poets down the centuries. As well as being prime walking country, the Ceiriog Valley has excellent facilities for fishing, shooting and pony trekking, and there are plenty of welcoming country pubs.
