Corwen
This
Welsh town is associated with Owain Glyndwr, the Welsh hero who led a rebellion
against the English in the early 15th century, and a modern sculpture
in the town square commemorates him.
There is a leisure centre and the town is a
good touring and angling centre. A climb from the church will give you good
views of the area – across the valley on its own hilltop is Cae’r Drewyn, a
major prehistoric fortress.
To
the east of Corwen, Carrog is a pretty village with an old stone bridge over the
River Dee, and the beautifully restored railway station is the terminus of the
Llangollen Railway. At Glyndyfrdwy you will find the Original Butterfly Man, an
unusual craft making butterflies for decorating the outside of many of the local
houses. To the west, Rug Chapel and Llangar Old Church, now both owned by CADW,
are well worth a visit. Further
west is Hiraethog country with moorland rising to 1,800ft, and the nearby
village of Cerrigydrudion, with small shops and local pubs.
