Llangollen

(also see: Chirk)

Valle Crucis Abbey
Once an important stop for travellers heading to and from London on the A5, Llangollen is today a lively little town, and home to the annual Llangollen International Musical Eisteddfod which takes place in July and attracts competitors from all over the world.

A popular destination for day visitors, Llangollen also boasts a number of friendly hotels and guest houses. The town has a fine stone bridge across the River Dee, adjacent to which is the railway station, start of the eight mile journey to Carrog on the Llangollen Railway, the only standard gauge steam railway in North Wales.

Popular with children are the regular “Friends of Thomas” events held on the railway. Also on a railway theme is the International Model Railway World with 25 working layouts, and Doctor Who exhibition in the Lower Dee Exhibition Centre.

Plas Newydd, a gothic timber-framed house open to the public, was once the home of two Irish gentlewomen known as the Ladies of Llangollen. Eleanor Butler and Sarah Ponsonby invited the famous people of the 1780’s to their home, including Wellington, Shelley, Byron, Wordsworth and Scott.

A popular walk is that along the towpath of the Llangollen Canal to the Horseshoe Falls at Berwyn, or is you prefer, you can take a trip in a horse-drawn barge, starting at the Wharf.

Outside the town, at the foot of the Horseshoe Pass, lie the ruins of Valle Crucis Abbey, now in the care of CADW.
