![]() Paul and Susan Burnet ready to welcome visitors to Melyd House, Meliden. |
A Meliden couple who have only recently opened a new bed and breakfast establishment have walked away with a top grading award from the Wales Tourist Board. Paul and Susan Burnet of Melyd House in Bryn Llys East gained a 5 Star Bed & Breakfast grading when
a Wales Tourist Board inspector visited them recently. |
“We’ve lived here for fifteen years” said a delighted Sue Burnet “and realised that there was a shortage of high quality accommodation in the Prestatyn area, and so we decided to open our own house to visitors. We particularly cater for people who are visiting friends and family in the area who are looking for somewhere nice to stay”.
Paul and Sue have lovingly redecorated their home from top to bottom, creating two luxury en-suite
bedrooms for visitors, and have even developed their own website at www.melydhouse.com. The house is set on the edge of the picturesque St Melyd Golf Course and has views out towards the
Irish Sea in the distance. Hearty Welsh breakfasts are served at Melyd House, using only the freshest
local ingredients, with a varied menu featuring items including pork sausages and bacon from a local
farm, Flintshire honey and locally produced yoghurt.
“We’re delighted to see another 5 Star Bed and Breakfast establishment in North Wales” said Jon
Richmond of North Wales Tourism. “It’s the first one to go straight to 5 Stars at its first
inspection, and it’s the first 5 Star property in the Rhyl and Prestatyn area. It’s great news for
tourism – and for Paul and Susan!” he added.

North Wales success at Wales Tourism Awards
It was a good night for North Wales at the Wales Tourism Awards held in Cardiff on Friday 8th December 2000 as four awards were collected by members of North Wales Tourism.
Quality Crown Award & Tourism Manager of the Year Award
There was a double success for Badgers Cafe & Patisserie in Llandudno, who won not only the Quality Crown Award, but also the Tourism Manager of the Year which went to the Manageress, Donna Horton.
Badgers Cafe & Patisserie is situated in Llandudno’s Victoria Shopping Centre, and is possibly the only member of the Guild of Tea Shops to be found in a shopping centre! Staff attend to customers dressed in Victorian costume, which blends well with Llandudno’s Victorian heritage. Since opening in 1997, the cafe has become one of the most popular places for shoppers and visitors alike to eat in the town. “It would have been a great honour to have won one award, but to win two is fantastic” said Donna Horton. “But it’s all due to the hard work of the great team we have here at Badgers Cafe, and congratulations are due to everybody.” Owner of Badgers Cafe & Patisserie, Barry Mortlock was very pleased at the win. “I am delighted that we won two awards, and especially pleased that Donna has won the Tourism Manager of the Year Award. The awards dinner in Cardiff was in a superb setting in the National Museum, and North Wales had a good night there.”
