Llyn Peninsula - Aberdaron

A delightful holiday and fishing village on the tip of the Llyn Peninsula, Aberdaron is at the end of the old pilgrims’ route.

Its large beach is ideal for both swimming and surfing, and the town hosts an important annual sailing regatta.

Separated from the mainland by a treacherous stretch of water, is Bardsey Island or Ynys Enlli, site of a 6th century monastery. To early Christians it was a holy island, and 20,000 saints are reputedly buried there.

At Porth Oer, 2.5 miles north west of Aberdaron, are Whistling Sands, so called because they appear to whistle when walked upon.

At Rhiw, four miles from Aberdaron, is Plas-yn-Rhiw, a small 17th century manor house. Owned by the National Trust, it has ornamental gardens overlooking Porth Neigwl. The house still retains most of its original furniture, and there are many rare plants in the gardens.
